Focusing on land use and zoning litigation, including riparian rights, as well as constitutional litigation

Larry Opalewski is a partner at Dalton & Tomich. He focuses his practice on land use and zoning litigation, including riparian rights, as well as constitutional litigation. He has significant experience in all aspects of litigation and has represented individuals, religious institutions, small to mid-size businesses, large businesses, and municipalities. The Religious Land Use and Institutionalized Persons Act (RLUIPA) is an area of particular interest. Additionally, Larry has successfully supported developers seeking approval from local planning commissions across the state of Michigan.

Larry was selected as a “Rising Star” litigator by Super Lawyers from 2017-2023. He was also selected as an “Up & Coming” lawyer by Michigan Lawyers Weekly in 2021. While he enjoys advocating for his clients through litigation, he also seeks to solve problems outside the courtroom. Larry has been certified as a civil mediator, and he appreciates the value of pre-litigation conflict resolution. Larry is a member of the State Bar of Michigan and the Detroit Bar Association, and is admitted to practice in the Sixth Circuit and Ninth Circuit Courts of Appeal.

A published author, Larry is a graduate of the University of Detroit Mercy School of Law and Oakland University. In law school, he served as Law Review Title Editor.

When not practicing law, Larry enjoys serving his community and his church. He spent several years as a local planning commissioner and is an avid fan of outdoor activities, fitness, and sports. His greatest joys in life are his beautiful wife and daughter.

Larry returned to Dalton & Tomich in 2018 after spending three years with the firm from 2013 to 2016. Before returning to Dalton & Tomich, he practiced civil defense law at a well-respected firm in the Metro Detroit area.
