Kate Brink and Larry Opalewski Participate in Federal RLUIPA Roundtable

Yesterday, attorneys Kate Brink and Larry Opalewski were invited to participate in “Combating Religious Discrimination Today,” one of a series of federal interagency outreach efforts hosted by the U.S. Department of Justice and the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Eastern District of Michigan.

The event consisted of a roundtable discussion that focused on RLUIPA and land use discrimination facing places of worship, particularly minority religious organizations. Leading the discussion were Barbara McQuade, U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of Michigan, DOJ Community Relations Service Director Paul Monteiro, DOJ Civil Rights Division Senior Counsel Johnathan Smith, and DOJ Civil Rights Division Special Counsel for Religious Discrimination Eric Treene.

The roundtable was a great opportunity to bring together RLUIPA attorneys, local civil rights leaders, and members of the federal government to openly discuss the issue of religious discrimination, particularly in the area of land use decisions. The event also allowed the participants to brainstorm ways to work together to effectively use RLUIPA to combat such discrimination. You can learn more about the event here.

Dalton & Tomich, PLC recently prepared and posted the very first comprehensive list of RLUIPA land use cases and Law Review Articles. Read about them here.
